Backup, and WHY if you need it… its probably too late…

Recently I had an experience that made me VERY aware exactly how important my files are to me… and before I get into it…

[FULL DISCLOSURE: I will be recommending a service called LIVEDRIVE at the end of this blog post, I am an affiliate and I do get compensated when/if you sign up… so just wanted to make that clear in case you're wondering…]

Lets start at the beginning…

While I'm not here to mention names of specific email providers….

I remember logging into my account one day looking for emails from a specific person who I know for a FACT is in my email…

Only to discover literally an entire ERA of emails were gone from my email…

I never erased them…

But they were gone, never to be seen again…

This was my “first” encounter with the “loss prevention” niche.

Seriously up until then I never even considered why backup would even be important… I just assumed nothing would ever get lost…

Couple years later…

2nd Encounter… I (kinda) got “caught with my pants down”…

April 2015 when I was running a membership site that built up to a little over 600 members at a time…

Business was going well, members accessing their content and all was good…

One day I try to log into my admin panel and I see a 1980's like TETRIS screen with a message “you've been hacked”…

I looked at the top address bar to make sure I typed in the CORRECT website URL…

Because this kind of stuff always seems like could happen to “someone else”

But never to YOU… right?

WRONG…

I actually was hacked

I seriously dont really know how it happened but I have my suspecions because a few weeks beforehand I purchased a video plugin and they were offering “done for you installation” and all I had to do is provide them with my log in info, which I did…

But luckly for me, just before it happened I was moving from one host to another and the method I used to move was to simply make a complete CLONE of my data and then upload that “clone” to the new hosting site.

What I ended up doing is simply restoring the site, and it “kinda” worked,

But some of the newer members who joined, never made it to the original backup because it was several weeks old.

If it wasn't for that small little backup file, I would have had to spend another month or more re-building not to mention having to seriously tick off all the members…

It would have been a NIGHTMARE without that small little file.

Recently…

I decided to change laptops and upgrade to the new slim and very sexy looking 12″ Macbook by Apple.

I was only going to change if I got a good deal on the current laptop I was using which another Macbook, but the PRO version which served me well over the years.

I had a classified ad up for a while… and I listed it at a price I thought was fair for a completely maxed out Macbook PRO.

But I haven't had any takers, not for the first 3 weeks or so.

I got a reply one day from a guy who started by asking some questions about the usage, and overall condition of the laptop.

After some back and forth emails, we agreed on the price but I just wasn't sure if this guy is going to actually do it or not, so I decided I wasn't going to buy the new laptop just yet, ill wait until I sell first and then buy the new laptop from the funds I got from the sale of the current one…

Before I met the guy, I organized all my important files and moved them to a 64GB USB drive… so I had everything I needed in case the sale goes through.

But when we met, he ran some tests on the laptop and mentioned that the battery is nearly dead and he would have to get a new one and wanted to factor that into the price.

I said no…

And the sale never happened…

I took the laptop home and over the next few days continued working on it, as usual…

About 3 days later, we started the negotiation again and finally agreed on a price that I thought was fair, considering the battery was going to need to be replaced soon.

We met, did the exchange, and that was the end of the transaction…

But what I didn't realize at the time was the very last backup I have of my files was 3 days old.

And very UN-LUCKLY for me, during those last 3 days I was actually working on some files for a project that I had to completely redo from scratch… and because it was such a brain drain to do, i put it off for several months before I got back to it.

The true “COST” of NOT having a back up

About 3 months later I ended up finally making the time to re-do the files I lost because I didn't have a backup of my original work…

And that project ended up being one of my most successful projects to date.

We're talking record revenues, thousands of new clients and that made me think…

If only I had a SIMPLE backup solution that automatically backed up my data, I would be that much further ahead today…

And these days, I do a lot of work on new projects and I am so obsessed with not losing my data that I have finally decided to do something about it and I got a backup solution.

My criteria was simple.

#1. I want it to work automatically in the background without me having to tinker with it…

#2. I want it to backup my stuff DAILY so if anything ever happens, I'm never more than a day behind..

#3. I want it to be unlimited, so I dont have to think about “quotas” and file sizes…

And…

#4. I want it to be competitively priced so its something I can easily add to my budget without feeling guilty.

The Solution

While I can't say I looked at hundreds of solutions…

I did look at a bunch (as in less than 10 or so)

And one that stood out to me was LIVEDRIVE

Why?

Because their service answered my entire criteria above.

The backup is automatic, unlimited, works without you having to touch it… and… priced well.

So I signed up for the free trial.

And I'm happy to report, its working wonderfully.

I got the PRO suite, which includes the remote drive, which means you can access your most important files even if you're not on your PC…

From a mobile phone… tablet… etc…

Now while I'm not sure what your criteria is, if its similar to mine above, I recommend you give it a “test drive” for 14 days.

Conclusion

LIVEDRIVE is a simple solution that will “do its thing” in the background once you set it up, which is just the way I like it.

I know at times you might not think backup is important but if you learn anything from this blog post, I hope its the fact that by the you'll actually NEED it, it will be too late.

So here is my referral link to sign up for the service, and I hope you do… because if it helps save you even 1 time… just 1 time… it did its job.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
